Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you need car insurance Dubai?

According to UAE Traffic Authorities, it is illegal to drive without having a car insurance. You are required to get your car insured first and then only it can be registered.

Granted, there are now fewer road accidents in the UAE. They still occur in the thousands, though, and many of them lead to injuries and property damage.

With that said, the primary reason to get auto insurance coverage is that it's the law in Dubai, and all of the UAE. More than that, it exists to protect the other people you share the roads with.

However, having car insurance also means that you receive protection from liabilities. It can serve as your financial net in case you get into an accident. Depending on the policy you get, it can also help pay for your own losses and damages.

A Legal Requirement

If you would like to drive a vehicle in the UAE, including Dubai, you need to get insurance first. The law requires you to first obtain insurance before you can register a vehicle in Dubai (or anywhere in the UAE). Otherwise, you can face hefty penalties if you get caught driving uninsured.

Third-party liability coverage is the minimum or basic insurance required by the law. It provides coverage for bodily injury or death to any third party. It also helps cover the costs of property damage to others caused by the insuree's vehicle.

Penalties of Driving Uninsured

In the UAE, there are more than 130 types of traffic violations that can incur fines and black points. One of these is driving a motor vehicle without insurance.

If caught, uninsured drivers can expect to pay a fine of Dh 500 as well as incur four black points. The RTA also enforces a seven-day retention period for driving without insurance coverage.

Availability of Comprehensive Auto Insurance in Dubai

The legally-required third-party liability often won't cover any damages to your vehicle. An exception will be if there's another party at fault for the accident. They must also have insurance and that you can make a claim against the other driver.

As such, it's best to get a more comprehensive car insurance policy with better coverage. The best insurance in Dubai meets the required third-party liability coverage, while also covering you and your car. A more robust policy protects you from losses or damages to your insured vehicle.

You will even find insurance policies that provide fire and theft protection. You can also get coverage for other non-collision damages, such as those from floods and riots. Many of the insured perils in robust auto insurance policies are like those in home insurance.

What Extras Can You Get With a More Robust Policy?

At the very least, comprehensive insurance offers emergency medical expense coverage. It should also provide some level of free personal injury coverage.

All these are things that basic third-party liability coverage doesn't include.

Those are just a few "extra" perks you'd get with comprehensive insurance, though. Here are some of the many other benefits of such policies.

Coverage for Your Family

Many car accidents occur in vehicles occupied by more than the driver.

Fortunately, the best comprehensive auto insurance policy covers your family too. Of course, you, as the driver, also receive coverage for injuries and property damage.

Protection for Personal Belongings

Such policies also provide coverage for personal belongings. Meaning, they protect not only your vehicle itself but also some of your stuff inside the car. These include items that you store in the boot or glove compartment.

Round-the-Clock Road Side Assistance

Vehicles can break down at the worst time possible, potentially causing road accidents. It can be even worse if yours stutters and dies in the middle of nowhere. This can leave you stranded and at risk of heat-related illnesses.

With the best comprehensive car insurance coverage, you can rely on 24/7 roadside assistance. Meaning, you simply need to contact your reliable insurer, and they will come to your rescue. To top it off, this round-the-clock service is free of charge.

What Do You Need to Get Auto Insurance in Dubai?

You only need to furnish a few documents to purchase auto insurance in Dubai. The insurer needs these to validate your identity and confirm your driving experience.

Here's what you can expect the auto insurance provider to require from you:

  • A copy of your driver's license
  • The registration car of your vehicle
  • A copy of your passport photo page

That's it! From here, the authorised insurance agent will guide you through all the other steps. Feel free to ask as many pertinent questions as you need, especially if you see any unfamiliar terms.

As for where to apply, know that in Dubai, you can now purchase auto insurance online. You only need to answer questions related to your auto insurance needs. However, if you need extra help, you can always have an insurance agent call you.

What is the difference between comprehensive insurance and third party liability?

A comprehensive insurance policy will cover your vehicle against your own Loss or damage as well as third party property damage. Loss or damage could result from an accidental collision, fire, burglary, external explosion, self-ignition, lightning, theft and any malicious act by a third party.

We highly recommend our valued customers to choose the comprehensive insurance policy (if applicable) so that you and your vehicle enjoys complete protection.

Third party liability policy is the basic coverage that is mandatory as per the UAE law and it covers death or bodily injury to any third party/person as well as property damage caused by the insured’s vehicle. However, you must understand that this policy does not cover any damage or loss to your own vehicle following an accident.

Can I get Comprehensive Insurance Policy for my old vehicle?

Comprehensive cover is available for vehicles up to the age of 10 years only. Vehicles over 10 years needs to be referred to our motor underwriters who will review on a case to case basis. We would support you as much as possible we can in helping you with your requirements.

Can insurance and registration be in two different names?

The policyholder will be both the registered vehicle owner and the main driver. The UAE Traffic Authority will only register the vehicle under the name stated on the insurance policy

Why is the validity of my insurance 13 months?

What is this excess (deductible) shown on my Policy?

The excess or deductible is the amount you pay to the insurance company in case of a non-recoverable motor claim. Non-recoverable motor claims unusually occur when an accident is caused by the insurance policy holder. This is only applicable for comprehensive insurance.

However, if you get into an accident and it is not your fault then you don't have to pay any excess.

How does Agency Repair differ from Non – Agency Repair?

In agency repair, you can take your vehicle to the manufacturer’s authorized workshop to fix any damage due to an accident. In case of non-agency repair, you can take your vehicle to any of Tokio Marine authorized garages to fix any accidental damage.

Am I eligible for rental car if my car is in the garage/workshop?

The cost of the rental vehicle is covered only if the clause is included in your policy schedule. The duration of a free rented car is generally between 7-10 days (depending on the type of policy) until your car is fully repaired. You can include this clause in your policy, by paying an additional premium.

However, if the Claim is caused by a Third Party, then an alternative car, can be arranged for you from the Third Party insurance Company. Our Claim Advisors will assist you at the time of a claim.

I have just had an accident, what are the basic things that I need to take care of?

We recommend you to adhere to the following instructions immediately after an accident:

  • Where possible please help anyone suffering injury.
  • Call Police on 999 and explain the situation.
  • Ask the police if you should remove the vehicle from the site. Move your vehicle if you are instructed to do so, otherwise keep the vehicle at the accident site. It is not unusual for the police to instruct you to go to the nearest police station for a hearing. Simply follow their instructions.
  • If you are instructed to stay at the accident site, get out of the car immediately and wait for the police. Staying in the car is very dangerous especially if your car is stopped on the road or roadside curb.
  • Do not attempt to drive a heavily damaged vehicle. This may cause a further accident, or damage the vehicle. If your vehicle is not in a drivable condition, request Tokio Marine Nichido / complimentary road side assistance service provider for towing your vehicle to a workshop.
  • A police report is required by the UAE law in order to make a claim. Ensure that you do not block the traffic to avoid any penalty imposed by the police.
  • If there is bodily injury to the driver and/or passengers and if any of the personal items placed in the vehicle are damaged, you must inform the police and have it mentioned in the police report to claim the benefits enlisted in the policy.

What is the procedure in case of a claim? What documents do I submit to apply for a claim?

You can now report a claim by filling out a simple form on our website. Alternatively, you can also call on our claims help line desk 600 50 30 30 and speak directly to our claims team. Claims Call Center operation hours is from 8am-8pm, Sunday to Thursday.

  • Copy of Driving License
  • Copy of Registration Card (or Mulkiya)

In case of a claim, will you be able to provide me with an alternative car to use while mine is in the garage?

This facility can be accommodated only if the "Rental of Alternative Vehicle" clause is included in your policy. You can include this clause in your policy, by paying an additional premium.

However, if the Claim is caused by an Third Party, and is not unknown, then an alternative car, can be arranged for you from the Third Party insurance Company. Our Claim Advisors will be able to advise you on this, at the time of a claim.

Why do I need to wait three working days for the Third Party’s (TP) insurer to inspect my vehicle?

As per the UAE Insurance Authority guidelines, Tokio Marine is required to notify the loss to TP’s insurance carrier if the estimate repair cost exceeds a pre-set amount (AED 5,000). Usually it would take three working days for the TP’s insurer to inspect the vehicle and agree on the repair cost with the repairer. This is required to recover the expenses incurred for repairing the vehicle from the TP’s insurer and to maintain your No Claim Discount (NCD).

There are times when I am asked to pay the excess amount more than once. Why is it so?

The excess or deductible mentioned on your policy schedule is applicable for each separate accident / incident generating a damage for which there is no identified Third Party responsible according to the police / traffic court judgment.

In case of car being sold, is it possible to transfer insurance in the name of new owner?

If a car is sold, the insurance doesn't get transferred to the new owner. This is not permitted because the terms and premium of the policy depends on the driver's experience.

What is the procedure to cancel my policy?

You can cancel the policy in the event of either selling the vehicle or exporting the vehicle.

Documents we require are either

  • No Plate Certificate from the traffic authority or
  • Export Certificate or
  • New Registration Card from the buyer.
