Guide to Dubai Fitness Challenge 2020

The Dubai fitness challenge is back for its fourth year and it’s set to be more energetic than ever. With hundreds of activities ranging from fitness classes to dragon boat racing, there’s guaranteed to be something that gets your pulse racing and your body moving. In 2019 there were over one million participants and this year the city wants even more people to join the fun. As with previous years, the event will see mini fitness villages set up throughout the city, offering socially distanced workouts and taster sports sessions for FREE! To make sure you don’t miss out, read our guide to the 2020 Dubai Fitness Challenge.

Why be a part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge?

The Dubai Fitness Challenge was brought to life in 2017 by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai. Its goal is to encourage residents to make health and wellness a priority and exercise regularly.   The event is sometimes referred to as the Dubai 30x30 due to the nature of the challenge. City residents are encouraged to take up 30 minutes of exercise for 30 consecutive days but the exercise you choose is completely up to you. You can exercise at home using 30x30 YouTube videos or try out a new activity - who knows, you might even discover a future hobby!  Whether you’re 9 or 90, exercising regularly improves your physical and mental health so we strongly encourage you to get involved! It can even help lower financial costs, like medical insurance , as the fitter you are, the more likely you are to avoid long term health complications.

When do we get geared up for the challenge?

The 2020 Dubai Fitness Challenge Starts on the 30th of October and ends on the 28th of November. This year, the whole city has been transformed into a giant fitness arena, so you don’t need to look far to get your free workout fix. Expect to find coordinated classes like Yoga, Zumba and Body Combat taking place around the city. This year class sizes are smaller due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with more classes on offer than ever before, you don’t need to worry about missing out!

How Can I Join in the Fun?

One of the best things about the Dubai Fitness Challenge is that it is open to everyone. There are no age limits and no prequalifications, so even if you don’t exercise regularly at the moment, you’ll find plenty of beginner activities designed to get you moving whilst having a laugh!   Every year, the number of people joining the challenge gets bigger and the city’s schools, businesses and universities all encourage getting involved. You can join the fun by registering for the challenge and downloading the app to keep track of your personal progress.

Will the Challenge Be Affected by COVID-19?

This year has been more challenging than most, but it hasn’t stopped the Dubai Fitness Challenge!  All live events will be socially distanced and adhere to the strict safety protocols so that you can enjoy your 30x30 with complete peace of mind. You might be asked to bring a mask along to team sports and group activities, so make sure that you have one handy to avoid missing out on the action. If you don’t feel comfortable taking part in live activities, this year brings a brand-new option to city residents. A whole host of virtual challenges will be available via the app and the Dubai Fitness Challenge website so you’re able to participate from the comfort of your own home. Best of all: virtual challenges are also completely free!

Different activities that are offered?

One thing for sure, you’re definitely not going to feel bored over the coming month! Whether you’re into gym classes, relaxing yoga sessions or adrenaline-pumping rock climbing, there’s an event made just for you.  Remember the Dubai Fitness Challenge isn’t only about the exercise. It’s also about challenging yourself to try new things and discovering new passions! So, don’t be afraid to try an activity that seems a little more unusual. Here are some of our favourite activities on offer:

Al Marmoom Dune Run

If you really want to challenge yourself then the Al Marmoom Dune Run is not to be missed. The 5-kilometre race takes you past scenic sandscapes and the dune’s famous flamingos. Be sure to register to save your spot.

La Mer Open Water Swim

For swimming enthusiasts, the La Mer open water swim is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself. Participation is open to all ages and swimmers can choose whether to compete in the 200m, 400m, 800m or 1600m races. With energetic music pushing you on, you’ll have a whale of a time!
